Did you know that Sugar is Sugar? I certainly did not.
Yes, the other ingredients in our food might be healthy, such as oats in a granola bar. But, the chemical make up of sugar, regardless of whether it's from a banana or a chocolate bar, is the same.
Our bodies cannot tell the difference between 'good' sugar and bad.
In January 2015 our family Quit Sugar. It started with me reading this book, and then continued from there. Since the children must follow as we lead, they too quit sugar.
Sugar is not just a bundle of naughty empty calories, but instead it is a poison disguised as a pleasurable indulgence. Although it certainly is a treat, sugar is responsible for: weight gain, diabetes, over eating, headaches, immune disease, unbalanced body systems, increased aging process, anxiety, loss of concentration, and the list goes on.
I am not an expert, therefore it is not my goal to teach about health here. I am only sharing our experience, as well as referring a fantastic book/cookbook.
In this book I relearned how to eat, how to read food labels properly, how to make the necessary changes to remove sugar from our lifestyle, how to stock my kitchen for success, and many new recipes. I also learned how to reintroduce natural products, such as brown rice syrup, for sweetness and keep within the 9 - 12 gram limit. But even that is only when we absolutely have a craving!
Now, we all sleep better, feel better, have more energy, and eat less. I also spend a lot more time with each of our daughters since quitting sugar. That might sound strange, but the truth is they have become very interested in the preparation of food, and want to learn more about cooking/baking. They love to find recipes, shop for the ingredients and then create the meal together.
It's not a perfect world, so we still let the kids 'loose' at birthday parties, or visits at a friend's house. They are allowed to eat whatever is being offered, however, for the most part, they know their own limits.
I can't wait to share some of our new favorite recipes with you.
